The first, and most important step, in your Amazon journey is finding a great product to sell. Product research lays the foundation for a successful business, as even the best listing optimization and PPC advertising won’t salvage a poor product choice.
Fortunately, there are powerful Amazon product research tools available to streamline this process and uncover high-potential products.
I sifted through a ton of product research tools (including ones I use regularly) to find what I think are the five best Amazon product research tools. Here’s what I found.
What Makes the Best Amazon Product Research Tool?
Choosing the best Amazon product research tool means knowing what to look for. Top tools should be accurate, easy to use, and provide detailed data. They should help sellers spot winning products, analyze competition, and plan ahead.
Here is a list of the criteria I looked at when choosing the best Amazon product research tools:
- Advanced Filter Options: Every seller has specific criteria they are looking for in a potential product. The ability to narrow down products based on advanced filters is a must for a product research tool
- Easy-to-Use: Product research involves looking at a lot of information and data. Having easy-to-read graphs and columns is important for saving time and getting the most out of your tool
- Market Coverage: Not every seller uses the same marketplace. To find tools that work for all sellers we selected product research tools that work in multiple Amazon marketplaces
- Additional Features: Being able to research potential product ideas and then validate them in the same tool is a big bonus. Many of the Amazon product research tools on our list also come bundled with additional tools that will help you validate and source potential products
We also tested the onboarding process for each tool to ensure it’s simple and easy for new users to learn.
1. Helium 10
Helium 10 Pros:
- Very comprehensive filters to narrow down potential products
- Complete historical sales data available with every plan
- Tons of educational content and resources available
- Includes 30+ tools for keyword research, listing optimization, refund management, and more
Helium 10 Cons:
- Can be too complex for complete beginners
- Fairly expensive mid-tier plan
If you’re looking for an all-in-one Amazon seller tool Helium 10 has got you covered. With over 30 high-quality tools available Helium 10 helps sellers with all aspects of their Amazon business. Their toolset ranges from product research, listing optimization, keyword research, inventory management, refund management software, and more.
Their Black Box Amazon product research tool includes the most advanced filters we’ve come across. Besides standard parameters like price, average revenue, and category, Black Box also includes filters for the number of images in a listing, review rating, best sales month, and product variations.
Helium 10 also includes their X-Ray tool and a Chrome extension that allows users to do in-depth product research directly from the Amazon website. X-Ray is accessible through the Chrome extension and gives a detailed breakdown of every product currently displayed. The data includes best seller rank, all-time historical sales data, price, FBA fees, estimated monthly revenue, and more. X-Ray also provides users with several filters to find specific products as well as supplier information from Alibaba.
If you’re interested in trying Helium 10, they offer a free account option. This allows access to select premium tools with a limited number of uses.
Helium 10 Pricing: Three paid plans are available starting at $39/month. There is also a free account option available.
2. Jungle Scout
Jungle Scout Pros:
- Several Amazon product research tools. Includes Opportunity Finder, Product Database, and Chrome Extension tools for product research
- Access to additional Amazon tools for keyword research, competitor analysis, review automation, and more
- Subscription includes Academy, a free Amazon course for new sellers
Jungle Scout Cons:
- Limited access to historical keyword data
- Fairly expensive mid-tier plan
Similar to Helium 10, Jungle Scout provides Amazon sellers with an all-in-one platform. Beyond product research, it includes tools for keyword research, inventory management, a supplier database, AI assistance, and sales analytics.
Their Opportunity Finder tool allows users to do product research based on keyword data. Users input their criteria like average price, competition, seasonality, and search volume and the tool displays a list of matching results.
What separates Jungle Scouts’ tool is their “niche score” metric. This score takes into account things like demand, competition, and list quality to calculate a score out of 10. It’s a quick way for users to see if a keyword is worth looking into or if they should move on.
Jungle Scouts’ major drawback for product research is their limited historical keyword data. Historical keyword data is a great way to spot trends and price history for a potential product. Unfortunately, sellers on their cheapest plan only have access to one month of data and it isn’t until you are using their most expensive tier that you gain access to two years’ worth of historical information.
Jungle Scout Pricing: Three plans starting at $49/month
3. ZonGuru
ZonGuru Pros:
- A complete suite of product research and validation tools
- Great customer support
- Constant updates and new tools added
- Very easy to use. Great for new sellers
ZonGuru Pros:
- Only provides one year of historical sales data
- Not quite as feature-rich as all-in-one tools
Like our previous entries, ZonGuru is a complete software toolkit for Amazon sellers. While not as extensive as Helium 10 or Jungle Scout the platform currently has a total of 15 different tools focused on product research, keyword research, listing optimization, product sourcing, and more.
ZonGuru’s product research tools for Amazon are some of the best on the market and include their Niche Finder, Love / Hate, and Sales Spy tools along with a Chrome Extension.
The Niche Finder tools allow users to search for product ideas based on their specific criteria. Much like Jungle Scout they include a “Niche Score” metric that quickly lets users know if a product has potential. What’s unique about ZonGuru’s algorithm is that it also includes potential startup investment costs. This is great if you’re a seller looking to start with a limited budget.
ZonGuru’s Sales Spy tool provides detailed breakdowns of specific Amazon products including a year of historical sales data. It’s a great tool for further validating potential product ideas and in-depth competitor analysis.
Another great Amazon product research tool is Love / Hate. This tool quickly analyzes thousands of Amazon reviews to find common issues or praises amongst similar products. It’s a great way to get ideas on how to improve existing products on the market.
ZonGuru Pricing: The Researcher Plan is $29/month and the Seller Plan starts at $49/month. There is a 7-day free trial available for both plans.
4. AMZScout
AMZScout Pros:
- Best Chrome extension for product research
- Excellent UI design
- Includes keyword and competitor analysis tools
AMZScout Cons:
- May be too complex for new sellers
- Not as feature-rich as competing all-in-one Amazon product research tools
AMZScout is another popular platform for Amazon product research. The two main tools users have access to are their Product Database and their excellent Google Chrome Pro Extension.
The AMZScout Product Database includes information from 10 different Amazon marketplaces as well as 16 customizable search parameters. This alone makes AMZScout one of the most flexible tools on this list as sellers can easily narrow their search to the exact type of product they are looking for.
However, AMZScout’s main claim to fame is its robust Chrome extension. This tool gives sellers a complete breakdown of a selected product including two years of sales history, potential suppliers, keywords, estimated sales, revenue, fees, and a niche score. In other words, it provides all of the information most standalone apps provide but from directly within a Chrome extension.
The main downside for AMZScout would be its limited scope. While it does include some additional tools for keyword research and competitor analysis it doesn’t include the range of platforms like Helium 10 or Jungles Scout. For newer sellers paying for a tool exclusively for product research may be a bit too much to ask.
AMZScout Pricing: The Seller’s Bundle for Amazon plan is $49/month. AMZScout also provides a 7-day free trial.
5. SmartScout
Smart Scout Pros:
- Best-in-class competitor research tool
- Provides a unique set of data not available in other software
- Includes tools for listing optimization, PPC, keyword research, and competitor analysis
Smart Scout Cons:
- Tool suite is mostly limited to product and competitor research
- May be complex for new sellers
The newest Amazon product research tool on our list is SmartScout. Initially released in 2021 SmartScout is a comprehensive product and competitor research tool for Amazon private label, wholesale, and online arbitrage sellers.
What separates SmartScout from every other product research tool is how they present data and the type of data available to users. Their Subcategory Tool breaks down Amazon’s total monthly sales by category and subcategory. Instead of taking a product-centric approach like most tools SmartScout lets you begin product research at the subcategory level and then focus on specific products.
Their product database lets you take the information from their Subcategory tool and start looking into specific products. Narrow down products by estimated revenue, product page score, reviews, number of competitors, and Amazon’s in-stock rate. The database is very customizable and quickly allows users to show and hide columns, making it easy to focus on the data that’s most important to you.
While their Product Database and Subcategory Tool are standouts for product research SmartScout also offers 10 additional tools. These include tools for keyword research, PPC, competitor analysis, and listing optimization. Users of SmartScout also gain access to unique tools like their Traffic Graph which is a visual graph displaying frequently bought together items.
SmartScout is not ideal for sellers looking for an all-in-one solution, as it lacks tools for product launches, inventory management, and bookkeeping—features offered by some competitors.
However, for in-depth product and competitor research, SmartScout stands out and delivers excellent results, making it a valuable tool for those focused on detailed market analysis.
Smart Scout Pricing: Their Basic Plan is just $25/month. For additional keyword tools and the Subcategory Explorer, you will need the Essentials Plan at $75/month
Which Amazon Product Research Tool Is Best for You?
Choosing the right Amazon product research tool comes down to your specific needs. Depending on their budget some sellers may not want to pay for a tool exclusively for product research. For these sellers platforms like Helium 10 and Jungle Scout may be good choices as they include tools to help with all aspects of an Amazon business.
Alternatively, more experienced sellers may opt for specialized tools like SmartScout that focus primarily on product or competitor research.
If you’re a new seller with a limited budget I recommend trying one of these tools maybe just for a month. This allows you enough time to find a potential product without the expense of a yearly subscription.
